Hi all, I’m very happy to be part of the Shapes WG, and looking forward to meeting all of you. I work in the AI research lab of Nuance Communications, in Sunnyvale, California. In a previous incarnation, I did AI research at SRI International for 16 years, primarily in the areas of agent-based systems, intelligent assistance, knowledge-based systems engineering, Semantic Web, and some NLP. I was a Principal Investigator in the DAML (DARPA Agent Markup Language) program, and much of my work during the 2000’s was in Semantic Web stuff, particularly oriented around Semantic Web services. I was de facto chair of the OWL-S Coalition and co-chair of the Semantic Web Services Language committee, both of which produced W3C member submissions (OWL for Services [1] and the Semantic Web Services Framework [2], respectively). Also in this area, I was a co-chair of the W3C Workshop on Frameworks for Semantics in Web Services [3]. Also while at SRI, among other things, I was a co-developer of the Open Agent Architecture, a contributor to the information extraction system FASTUS, and a contributor to the technology underlying Siri. In 2010 I joined Siri, Inc., a startup created by SRI. After the company’s acquisition by Apple, I worked on Siri for another 3 1/2 years as an Apple employee. I left Apple in 2013 to join Nuance. I have recognized the need for something like RDF Shapes in several different contexts, most particularly in connection with the work on OWL-S, and also in connection with my current work on knowledge graphs. I’m interested in both the theoretical and practical issues, and intrigued to see how this work evolves. Peter Patel-Schneider will be the lead representative for Nuance; I will serve as an alternate.
