@Crissov Extending the capabilities of `image()` seems more of an independent proposal from `light-dark()` being able to return an `<image>`. Yeah, the light/dark functionality _could_ be integrated into `image()` _instead_ of `light-dark()`, though browsers are already about to ship the extended functionality. And `cross-fade()` and `image-set()` are already implemented for some time. So I don't think we should hold up shipping this new `light-dark()` feature now, but it does seem reasonable to me to think about incorporating this functionality into `image()`.
