I'd be ok with either option 2 or 3. I think there are some non-trivial implementation consequences if we follow option 1 here. I also don't think there are strong use-cases to be able to support that. I'd like to, at least for now, resolve on either option 2 or 3 (presumably 2, since it has less magic and more expressible in CSS).
