I wanted to +1 this issue.

I have written a blog post that documents my specific use case: [highlighting text with semantic meaning in input fields](https://jamesg.blog/2026/03/03/highlight-text-inputs-css).

While my blog post doesn't mention `textarea`, I would love support for textarea too.

@bramus this is the idea I shared with you at State of the Browser 🙌
