@astearns JFYI: [ARIA (graciously!) discussed this issue with us and resolved](https://github.com/w3c/aria/issues/2710#issuecomment-3819696897) on the essence of @danielsakhapov's CSS proposal from this 12659 issue with some added edge case behavior prescriptions.
