Fwiw I very strongly prefer making "light-dark(image, image)" just work. Adding a new function for this feels very wonky and as a web developer my brain still says "this should just do the thing for all properties". The fact it's currently only colors disappoints me when I try to use it. So if we can expand it to cover images as another common case then that's a big win to me.
