Having `pages` be a counter at all sounds wrong to me. In my head at least, a counter is supposed to change through the document. Constants like the total page count feel like a different thing. Maybe it's widely used enough that this can't be changed, but I'd propose a different mechanism for getting the total page count, or other constants.
