Right, "cusotm functions" are value-level constructs, which are evaluated within a single CSS declaration. They're `var()` with extra powers, nothing more. @mirisuzanne's example is what you can do for now - it still centralizes the MQ decision into a single spot, which is most of the functionality you need.
