My take is that it's unfortunate to gate this behind `appearance: base`. This is an UX improvement that would generally be good for all users, so I'd rather have this be opt-out rather than opt-in. Other than that, yes, I agree we should do this, and that there should be a way to disable this (perhaps `::reveal { display: none }` is fine for that.
