As I noted in https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/10577#issuecomment-2231779930, I'd go with option 1. Giving it a separate name might confuse people, especially, because the new function's name pattern differs from the existing one. I.e. it's `light-dark()` and not `light-dark-color()`. This issue increases if we add a third variant at some point. Polymorphism increases maintainability and requires less muscle memory.
