Let's see if we can get consensus on the [first part of my proposal](https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/3216#:~:text=Styling%20elements%20%28differently%29%20based%20on%20whether%20they%20have%20preceding%20and%2For%20subsequent%20text%20nodes), i.e. styling elements based on whether they have preceding and/or subsequent text nodes, which seems to cover most use cases. The other use cases depend on introducing something to style the text nodes themselves, which I'd like to defer to #2208.
