I mean, it's about how much room the item has or doesn't have to take up the next available position, no?

It seems to me - at least based on the demos thus far - that more often than not if people employ this "tolerance", it will be to achieve a new order of items within the lanes because the default order seems "wrong".

So the value is some measure of this "wrongness"... tolerance, margin of error, etc. 

It seems sensible to think that the lanes have either more or less space for items to occupy based on this value.
