What about `flow-margin`? To use @jensimmons's car metaphor - imagine every car has an invisible, adjustable rear bumper extension - the **_flow-margin_**. Low flow-margin: The bumpers are tight. If Car 4 is even an inch shorter than Car 1, the driver of Car 6 sees that "gap" and swerves into the right lane to get ahead. High flow-margin: The bumpers are long. Even if Car 4 is shorter, its flow-margin covers the difference. Car 6 stays put because, according to the "margin," there’s no meaningful room to move forward. -- GitHub Notification of comment by nathanchase Please view or discuss this issue at https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/10884#issuecomment-3678039504 using your GitHub account -- Sent via github-notify-ml as configured in https://github.com/w3c/github-notify-ml-config
