Thank you, @firefoxic and @rjgotten, for responding to my comments! @firefoxic, you are so kind to take the time to read my entire comment and even find points of agreement! @rjgotten, I see! Rotating the usual flexbox by -90 degrees would indeed create a masonry layout. I initially thought of this as an auto-packing feature added to the grid layout. It's like that common scene in sci-fi movies where gravity is reversed, and everything on the ground is pulled upward. Since the Webkit and Chrome blogs compared this to the grid layout, I had been viewing this layout with a strong "grid mentality." But when looking at it with a "flexbox mentality," I feel like my previous impression has been greatly simplified.
