Thank you for writing this proposal @kbabbitt and thank you for the great response @SebastianZ. I previously wrote a much more simplistic / undetailed proposal in #9482. This is, in my opinion, one of the most glaringly missing and needed features of CSS in 2024, in the sense that there is no good workaround (even `gap` was easier to "polyfill" with negative margin on the container and positive margin on children).
