Cross document, I also don't see another way to associate elements. For same document transitions though, there is a possibility of using element object itself as the matching condition. I know this doesn't play too well with frameworks, but I believe at least some frameworks have an ability for the developer to hint that some elements have to stay the same. But I agree with @noamr, there are plenty of discussion to be had here.
