I would rather rely on transitivity rather doing trying a more manual definition. Your manual definition in (b) enforces "another element" and thus prevents the margins of a parent from collapsing through a child. But anyways, I think you aren't focusing on the relevant thing. Typically, when you have a pair of margins, what you care is whether they collapse, not whether they collapse through some indeterminate element.
