I really like the approach you described and have wondered for a while why masonry/collapse was not a part of CSS Grid. The only question I had was the one mentioned by @saivan regarding the expected outcome of setting both columns and rows to masonry. I still think the approach you've described makes sense, I'm just curious what should happen in this instance. Sorry if someone already answered this.
