@fantasai responding to your IRC comment, there are a lot of discussions here about how to declare page-types without URL patterns. The problem with that is that when we leave a page, we don't know anything about the page we're going to apart from it's URL (and whether this is a back navigation and so forth). That's why https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/8048#issuecomment-1716035713 focuses on URL matching as the only way to extract information about a navigation.
