The only thing I just don't get is why you are against adding optional `<length-percentage>`s to the `start` and `end` keywords you proposed. `start` and `end` are aliases for `block-{start|end}` and `inline-{start|end}`, which do allow `<length-percentage>`s as offsets. So it is consequent to allow them there as well.
