The sentence I was trying to indicate was "If a grid item is placed outside this limit, its grid area must be [clamped](https://w3c.github.io/csswg-drafts/css-grid/#clamp-a-grid-area) to within this limited grid.". This is meant to indicate clamping occurs as placement happens; it would be worded differently if it was intended to clamp all positions after *all* placement had happened, or if it intended for clamping to happen before placement (somehow).
