Well, `system-ui` isn't great on Japanese Windows either. Yu Gothic UI, the font which is resolved when `system-ui` is used on Windows (10+), looks like a condensed typeface thus is not great when used in paragraphs. People complained when GitHub added `system-ui` to their theme so they tweaked their CSS to add Meiryo for readability https://github.com/primer/css/pull/1573 .
