Ping @tabatkins, it would be great to have your thoughts on this issue. I think there's general agreement that not painting highlights across contain boundaries would be a suboptimal experience for developers and users. I'm in agreement with the points that @chrishtr has been making above, concluding that it would be reasonable to just go ahead and paint the highlights, but short of trying to rephrase those I'm not sure what else I can add.
