Thanks @faceless2 for that background on the SVGWG's proposal. It sounds like the amount of data you have to specify to create a Coons Patch mesh gradient is quite complex, so using SVG images rather than a function in CSS sounds like a better approach. As for what Adobe calls 'freeform gradients', the way they are specified seems much simpler.
