To follow up on this mornings discussion -- I noticed that the compositing spec [says](https://drafts.fxtf.org/compositing-1/#csscompositingrules_CSS) (for HTML but not SVG): > Everything in CSS that creates a stacking context must be considered an ‘isolated’ group. This makes the results I'm seeing in [my test](https://dbaron.org/css/test/2018/stacking-context-z-order) make a lot more sense -- but then I no longer understand what the distinction is between a stacking context and a grouping property. Is it a distinction that's only relevant to SVG? -- GitHub Notification of comment by dbaron Please view or discuss this issue at https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/6202#issuecomment-858158491 using your GitHub account -- Sent via github-notify-ml as configured in https://github.com/w3c/github-notify-ml-config
