Thanks for the summary of #765 WRT max-width. I get the intention now.

I don't think so, based on what @dholbert summarized in https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/5665#issuecomment-742119407. Looks like this is a semi-common pattern that exists out in the wild today.
