@arrowtype Or, we proceed on the basis that font makers are following the opsz spec as currently written and as clarified in the draft revision, which specifies that that the scale unit of the axis is a point (and that point is as used everywhere else in the OT spec: 1/72 physical inch). The issues you describe only arise if people don't respect the spec. If fonts are made consistently, then multiple levels of sophistication and accuracy are possible in opsz implementation in browsers and other software—including adjustments for devices, distances, and accessibility. I don't think we need flags for particular environment units.
