By keeping native black black and native white white, and keeping gradations to either lighten or darken in a certain direction as they do natively, it forces the author to pick colors that would actually work equally well across all platforms. 

This is not meant to be a tool to reverse the contrast of a control or to solve the problem of dark controls on a dark background.
