As previously mentioned much earlier in this thread, opsz variation should be thought of as conceptually independent of text style, even if the latter includes styles suited to conventional size uses, e.g. ‘titling’ presumed to be large, ‘caption’ presumed to be small, and in some fonts implemented within the opsz axis. To understand why this conceptual independence is important, consider a type family in which Text and Display are separate styles, implemented in separate fonts, each with its own opsz axis, whose ranges overlap in a mid-size range in which typographers may choose either style for subhead use.
