I want you people to find a solution to implement what the spec says. I don't care whether it is the existing letter-spacing, a new property or an extra value `letter-spacing: 1em gap`.
Just solve it. It's three years. The longer you take the more complicated the websites and ebooks get and if "@fantasai and a few others" get their way the impact of the change will be larger if you take another three years.

However I'm completely neutral towards the solution you guys choose. I just want you to choose on one ;)
