@jfkthame's proposal works for us, for what that's worth. For reference I want to flag up [issue](https://github.com/web-platform-tests/wpt/issues/17170) with the related test http://wpt.live/css/css-values/ch-unit-017.html which is - as currently specified - incorrect, because the font being used for font metrics _doesn't_ include the space character.
