I'm not necessarily disagreeing. The spec does say:

> The content values of named strings are assigned at the point when the content box of the element is first created (or would have been created if the element’s display value is none).

I filed an [issue](https://www.princexml.com/forum/topic/4389/using-page-counters-inside-string-function) with Prince, hoping to get their feedback.
