Learning that Safari doesn't already have a clip in place makes me lean even more to the no-limit camp. I'd personally prefer no limit at all. 

I could live with a wide clamp, as drawn in https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/4059#issuecomment-512421819 (or something like it).
