My position is that the `appearance` property should only have two *meaningful* values, but I don't think that means two values only, that would not be web-compatible. I think you should be able to say `appearance: clippy-trombone` and this should work and behave as `appearance: auto` ;-) I would prefer `appearance` and `-webkit-appearance` to be aliases if possible.
