Thanks @svgeesus - that's just what I was looking for. With that we would be able to ensure that using calcs tied to viewport units and a min/max value can result in any number range we want to apply to a particular variation axis. One thing I'd like to start doing is promoting a bit of standardization in usage of numerical ranges with type designers themselves, so they know the reason behind looking for a number range for width that normalizes on 100 for example. I've seen an example lately for GRAD that goes from -1 to +1 (so is expecting a small decimal number).
