@jonathantneal, maybe "possibly harming adoption" is too strong, as I think it would still be adopted, just not as easily. I would say adoption would be more painless for more people if the order of sides ended up being the same, regardless of whether or not they inserted the keyword to make it logical. If it is quick and easy to do the right thing without error (without having to stop and think about the order), then authors will do it sooner, and more. We already have a cognitive split between the order of 4-side shorthands vs. 2-direction (horizontal-first) shorthands. I want to minimize the effect of having a third difference.
