Ugh. Yeah, I forgot 0 comes after all the positive numbers when using tabindex. It is so unintuitive, but I agree that diverging would probably be worse. I don't have a problem with nav-index or tab-index as names. I prefer tab-index because it makes it easier to understand as a corollary of the attribute.
