It's probably also worth testing an example with 'position: relative; left: 100px' to see if the spanning element moves left with the relative positioning of the ancestor that it breaks, and probably also something graphical like 'filter'.

But if all implementations are acting like those elements aren't around the spanning element in those cases as well, then we should probably just stick with that approach.
