This is a nice piece on the tricks of social media. Further to the idea of combating manipulative design patterns, it lists ten of the specific techniques that social media platforms use to generate more eyes/impressions/shares that hijack our brains. I was particularly struck by the paragraph in which the author says the following: “Imagine if technology companies had a responsibility to minimize social reciprocity. Or if there was an independent organization that represented the public’s interests—an industry consortium or an FDA for tech—that monitored when technology companies abused these biases?” I wouldn’t expect W3C to do that sort of monitoring, but it could create tools for it. https://medium.com/thrive-global/how-technology-hijacks-peoples-minds-from-a-magician-and-google-s-design-ethicist-56d62ef5edf3 <https://medium.com/thrive-global/how-technology-hijacks-peoples-minds-from-a-magician-and-google-s-design-ethicist-56d62ef5edf3> -Annette
