COGA Guidance Subgroup: July 31st meeting summary

Hi, folks, we are continuing to test out Zoom's AI note-taking tool for
COGA meetings. Last week, the tool created a lot of formatting issues that
were too time-intensive for me to fix. This week, I asked the tool not to
use any formatting so I could add in the bullets, etc. Hopefully this

   The Global Inclusion Community Group reviewed the paper this week and
   provided feedback, focusing on the need to address how these systems affect
   not just people with disabilities but also those who aren't fluent in a
   language or come from different cultural backgrounds.

   COGA’s Guidance Subgroup discussed how to integrate Global Inclusion’s
   concerns without delaying publication since the call for consensus had
   already gone out to the full task force.
   -

   Julie, Jan, and John K. agreed to recommend making two changes to the
   working draft before publication:
   -

      adding a sentence to the introduction acknowledging that cognitive
      accessibility supports also benefit people who may not be fluent in a
      language or who have different educational or cultural backgrounds
      -

      adding an editor's note indicating plans to expand the paper with
      more internationalization content in the future version
      -

   Jan explained that the Global Inclusion group was particularly concerned
   with making internationalization issues visible early in the paper so
   readers would know there was relevant content for them.

      COGA’s Guidance Subgroup discussed placement and formatting options,
      with Jan preferring to mention internationalization higher in
the document
      for visibility.

      Julie advocated for bulleting the information so it’s easier to skim.

No concerns about the disability language or examples in the issue paper’s
introduction

   -

   The Global Inclusion group didn't have any concerns about the disability
   language already in the document, which surprised Julie.
   -

   Jan said the community group read through bulleted list of disability
   types as well as the paragraph with examples of specific disabilities that
   may require cognitive accessibility supports.

   Subgroup in on this conversation so that internationalization can be

   subgroup suggested two new sentences.

   Julie will also send an email to Lisa (and will CC Jan and John)
   explaining the two changes they're suggesting before publishing the working
   draft.

   Jan will be prepared to discuss these suggestions at Monday's meeting,
   since Julie will be on vacation next week.
