As I promised, during our last call, I checked with my very good friend, and longtime W3C Invited Expert in Japan, Makoto Ueki, about using filled in circles and “x” marked squares as icons. I believe he was responsible for translating WCAG 2 into Japanese.

His response is as follows:
We are not familiar with "a square with an x in it and a filled in circle".
We do like this. Check a square or select a number. (see attached image of white piece of paper). In Japan the draw a check mark in squares, and circles around items with numbers, to indicate selections.
