 Apologies, there are two entries in Microsoft’s Edge support page, this is the right one:

 So it is behind a flag at the moment (i.e. it is experimental and not intended for public use).
  
 Also, it says “The implementation in Microsoft Edge is focused on enabling Microsoft Passport with a PIN or Windows Hello to securely authenticate to Microsoft properties and third-party web sites.”
  
 I.e. it does not work with external USB devices, it only works on devices with a pin code or face recognition.
  
 I guess you could argue that if it is an issue then you’ll buy a new device, but it does seem premature.
