captions and complex images

Does anyone know if having a caption that identified important points in complex images or graphs are useful and what they should contain.

For example a screenshot demonstrates something, should that info be clarified also in text?


Is there any research on this?


Sometimes this information is in the alt text, should it be in a caption instead?
