I have tried to make comments in between your statements Lisa but some points I am not sure I understand so please forgive and odd items. Best wishes E.A. Mrs E.A. Restricted vocabulary Language may be restricted to a given vocabulary, or sub set of that vocabulary. When words are outside the known language an explanation should be provided using known words. Further, specific jargon can be added if they are known to the user For example: Restricted vocabulary such as Globish Restricted such as Globish 100 most common words Restricted such as Globish 500 most common words + Easy Web Jargon lexicon 2. Usage Literal language only Present tense only (I think it is better to say active rather than passive as not everything can be in the present) Number free (does this mean no use of numerals? Or no use of text for numerals?) Pronoun free (How can we be pronoun free in English – they are in the top 100 words we use and appear as separate symbols? (Arabic may have pronouns added to nouns making them part of the one word) Small chunks (short sentences, paragraphs etc) 3. Graphical support -Symbols as support -Realistic pictures as support -Either pictures or symbols (pictograms) as support What about icons (such as printer/email icons) and the impact of their use? 4. Types of symbols and pictures -Use a given symbol/picture set as preference (can include use my families or personal symbols/pictures wherever possible) -Use a given symbol/picture set strong preference -Hide content without symbol/picture support 5. Frequency of symbols/pictures - I am struggling with this one as it so depends on the context and type of webpage. Some pages really are not viable in symbols. -Use support symbols/pictures as much as possible (I would say ‘judiciously} -Use support symbols/pictures moderately (One per sentence) -Use support symbols/pictures some (One per paragraph) 6. Help I want tooltips I want side panel I want side panel that can be opened when I click on my help icon I want links to "more information" whenever possible I want definitions in the side panel I want link to human help whenever possible An audio/video version? Sorry this is a bit lame as the brain has gone to mush with too much baby talk over the last couple of days! Do tell me what else you want to see as I am not sure you have missed anything but I am wondering about Responsive Design and all these symbols when they come into contact with text and resizing – just a thought!
