Recent work has focused on extending chunks & rules to swarm computing where a set of cognitive agents collaboratively control many devices.  The extensions enable messaging between cognitive agents (name and topic based) and support for task synchronisation across agents independent of the underlying protocols.  A related research topic is multi-agent reinforcement learning  (MARL).  A more general question is how to combine neural networks and symbolic approaches to get the best of both approaches. Think in terms of a powerful sentient AI agent that manages lower level agents based upon chunks & rules that run at the edge.
