The XHTML 1.0 spec says; "Empty elements must either have an end tag or the start tag must end with />" -- http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/#h-4.6 which that example uses. Moreover, the example uses the HTML-backwards-compatible " />" (with a preceding space) form of closure. Mark.
