Steve was proposing applying an image map to canvas based on early work
done by Opera. It did not garner support. Some problems:
- limited to basic image map shapes
- more work to handle dynamically changing content
- the editor did not like it.

I recommend starting from the wiki pages, then working backwards. You
could also start from the archives. It seems to me that late '08 an early
'09 would have some useful material.
