I would see them, in that case, as just being convenient API representations of a signal input or output tied to the original node (the one that has a control, clock, whatever signal exposed on it). How would my example of a combined envelope/gain work with the idea you gave there? I don't understand how you meant the workings of that interface you wrote, with the two nodes in it.
