Need help to avoid losing my mind ... git and combobox are at it again

I don't want to repeat everything I've written in issue 559, but something
is strange. The bottom line is whether or not we need to merge a fix from
Jon for combobox that is in pull 734. To understand why I am having trouble,
please read my latest comment in issue 559.
