Greetings. For colleagues interested in interpretive discussion and argumentation and formal models of interpretive discussion and argumentation, inferencing, text inferencing, inductive, deductive and abductive reasoning are topical to interpretation.

Interpretation and inferencing are discussed in Meaning: Interpretation and Inference by Johan van Benthem. Varieties of inferencing are discussed in Effective Teaching of Inference Skills for Reading: Literature Review by Anne Kispal. Aspects of context and inferring meaning are discussed in Methods of Teaching Inferring Meaning from Context by JoDee Walters.

Informationally, in the United States, the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy indicate interpretive discussions (http://www.corestandards.org/ELA-Literacy/).

For a discussion about how debating and speaking activities meet the Common Core State Standards, see: http://www.speechanddebate.org/aspx/nav.aspx?navid=207 .

Kind regards,

Adam Sobieski
